Specialist, Diversity and Inclusion (Revised)

The Diversity and Inclusion Specialist contributes to integrating equity and inclusion into the City of Ottawa's workforce policies, programs and services. The Diversity and Inclusion Specialist provides leadership and direction in upholding the corporation's guiding principles by developing, implementing and supporting policies, programs, procedures, standards and guidelines. The Diversity and Inclusion Specialist develops and implements corporate and departmental diversity programs that promote a respectful and inclusive workplace through education and training, analysis of workforce analytics, advising on matters related to diversity and inclusion (including workplace conflicts), and contributes to policy, strategic planning and program development. These policies and programs must respond to, and reflect, the diverse needs of employees and the community.
Education & Experience
4-year university degree in Human Resources Management, Social Sciences, or a related area.
Minimum of five (5) years experience directly related to the development and implementation of equity and diversity policies and programs
Direct experience in client support and delivering of training programs
*Experience and formal training combined with demonstrated performance and ability may substitute for stipulated academic requirements.
Language, Certificates & Licenses
Ontario Human Rights Code, Canadian Human Rights Act and Employment Equity legislation
Current related practices of equity, diversity and inclusion in other organizations
Challenges facing equity-seeking groups in accessing employment and services
Dispute resolution and mediation
Importance and benefits of diversity and inclusion in the workplace
MS Office including Word, Excel.
Knowledge of applicable health and safety legislation, including the rights and duties of workers.
Competencies & Skills
Plan, organize and carry out assignments, meet deadlines, and prepare reports and recommendations for review at senior levels
Communicate effectively and persuasively, both orally and in writing, to all organizational levels within the City and with representatives of external organizations
Provide comprehensive information on diversity, inclusion, equity and human rights to diverse audiences, including developing and delivering information sessions and training programs for all levels of staff
Develop and interpret diversity statistical information and provide reports and analyses
Ability to assess complex issues/situations and apply effective, creative solutions
Ability to demonstrate experience in the implementation of strategies to increase inclusive (i.e. education, intervention, programs)
Ability to identify opportunities to develop and implement initiatives to encourage cultural change
Display sensitivity and commitment to human rights and equity issues
